Finding the perfect CMS

Why we recommend MODx

Simply put, MODx provides the best of both worlds – for our clients and for us. The software gives our clients a seamless way of updating their website, while providing a powerful framework which we can customize to our client’s needs.

Why choose it over another popular solution

Powerful and yet simple enough for us. raSANTIAGO + Associates did a great job of setting us up and getting us started with templates and solutions we need, now when we have a new product to talk about, it’s a simple as plugging in a few photos and some text and we’re going – no more waiting for webmasters to return our phone calls just to change a misspelled word.

Over the six years we’ve been deploying managed CMS solutions, we’ve learned a few things about what works and what doesn’t.

One perennially popular CMS is Drupal. Most customers approach us either with a Drupal system, or with the desire to implement Drupal. Drupal holds much promise. For a Drupal developer, there is little he can’t do. In running through the potential feature requests a client may have for a Drupal system, the word ‘no’ seldom arises.

This is the source of Drupal’s power and its weakness. It can be configured to do so much, but the time it takes to develop new features is often cost prohibitive, and the more you add, the more complicated the system becomes.

Additionally, this titanic system, capable of great expansion, is often too heavy for what most people need, and there is a good chance that this will not be the way you need to grow your site. Bringing a suitcase on a trip to the grocery store would cover your average haul, but why take the extra overhead? Find out the way to travel light.

Joomla, which is similar to Drupal in most respects, is also a bit of a giant. The Joomla community is a heavy development community, and while the system is quite adaptable, at the end of the day, most clients use a fraction of this platform’s offering.

Wordpress is another well-liked CMS. Originally developed as a blog, this application grows closer and closer to becoming a CMS everyday, but it is still a long ways off from being there. Working inside of it, developers often rely on simply adding on 3rd party extensions, or pushing Wordpress itself to fit into a space it does not belong.

MODx was one of the first CMS solutions that we found that did not have any of the following:

  • Unneeded features that get in the way more than they help
  • A simple backend interface that allows for people to create page and drop in content.
  • A legacy of being solution for something other than content management
